Super Bowl LVII is just over a month away and the NBAA has released travel information to those planning trips around the big game.
The 2023 Super Bowl will take place on Feb. 12 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ. NBAA Air Traffic Services released information about traffic volume to help those planning trips with an aircraft that weekend.

There is a high volume anticipated for the event and a ramp reservation program has been created and is being required for arrivals and departures, including drop-and-goes, both to and from airports in the Phoenix metropolitan area. This requirement runs from Wednesday, Feb. 8, through Tuesday, Feb, 14. Ramp reservations are being accepted now and many operators are encouraged to reserve a spot early.

FBOs are given an allocated slot of time by airport directors, which is determined by FAA arrival rates. The NBAA warns that these slots will run out quickly after Sunday, Jan. 29. Your reservation must be given through your chosen FBO at a given airport or airport authority.
Any regularly scheduled air carriers or air taxi operations, including any flight operating under Title 14, meaning any essential air service under the small community air service development program, are exempt from the reservation program. Flights like these have already been built into the arrival-departure matrix.
A high volume of fliers is arriving in the area for the Super Bowl, which overlaps with the Waste Management Phoenix Open, a golf tournament on the PGA tour, running from Feb. 9-12.

Parking will be a concern that weekend, which is why the NBAA said drop-and-go reservations are encouraged rather than overnight parking. Airports in the area will need to accommodate the influx of travelers for both sporting events, which is why both inbound and outbound ramp reservation is required from operators.
Reserve your slot soon since they are expected to go quickly. The NBAA said it is likely that airports in the area will be by prior permission required (PPR) only around the time of the event.
These airports are accepting reservations at their respective FBOs now:
• Glendale Municipal Airport (GEU)
• Phoenix Goodyear Airport (GYR)
• Phoenix Deer Valley (DVT)
• Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX)
• Scottsdale Airport (SDL)
• Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (IWA)
• Chandler Municipal Airport (CHD)
• Falcon Field Airport (FFZ)
Las Vegas area
The high volume will also change procedures in the Las Vegas area. The Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) will likely be restricting its operations to PPR during the Super Bowl weekend. The Super Bowl LVIII in 2024 is planned for the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and the FAA and NFL are considering a parallel ramp reservation program for the Las Vegas-area airports for this year’s event to control traffic as well as test the program for next years event. The NBAA said operators should prepare to acquire ramp reservations in both major markets.
The airports impacted by additional route structure, arrival/departure procedures and traffic management are Harry Reid International Airport (LAS), Henderson Executive Airport (HND) and North Las Vegas Airport (VGT).
Special air traffic procedures
There will also be special air traffic procedures in place to enhance safety and minimize delays. This will not only affect the primary airports listed earlier but other airports outside of the reservation system area that is expected to get a large portion of overflow volume.

FAA initiatives
Air traffic volumes will affect the ATC’s ability to deliver air traffic into the Phoenix Valley. Crews can expect air traffic management initiatives during the week of the event and heavy demand and traffic management initiatives could be seen Wednesday, Feb. 8, through Monday, Feb. 13.
The NBAA reports that initiatives could include ground delay programs (GDP), airspace flow programs (AFP), time-based metering, miles in trail, airborne holding and ground stops. Poor weather conditions could also increase the chance for initiatives.
Required route structures
IFR aircraft entering or leaving the area should file and will likely be routed in accordance with the FAA’s domestic notice. Turbojet arrival routes will be in place and enforced from 10 a.m. local time on Friday, Feb. 10 through 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12. The departure routes for turbojets will be in place and enforced from 5 p.m. on Feb. 12 through 11 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13.

Special event TFR
A special event TFR will be published in NOTAM before the event. This will outline the specific impacts associated with the temporary flight restriction (TFR). The TFR during the Super Bowl will prohibit any general aviation operations within a 10-mile radius of the stadium about two to three hours before kickoff and one hour before the game ends. Additional restrictions for general aviation could continue from 10-30 NM.
The NBAA said pilots are encouraged to cancel IFR flight plans when possible, either airborne or immediately upon arrival, to accommodate the many other IFR departure and arrival traffic.
TSA screening and gateway procedures will not be available for the event.
