Pratt & Whitney has celebrated one billion flying hours since the company was founded in 1928. Over 110,000 engines have been produced with over 66,000 currently in service for over 16,000 customers. P&W engines power a diverse range of aircraft in business aviation, general aviation, regional aviation, helicopter aviation and auxiliary power units.
“Aviation has the power to change the world. Our engines power aircraft that benefit millions of people every day,” P&W Canada President Maria Della Posta said.
“Every second, a P&WC-powered aircraft takes off or lands somewhere on the planet, whether they’re driving commerce, reuniting families, or powering humanitarian missions, emergency medical services, or search and rescue missions,” Della Posta said. “Achieving one billion flying hours is made possible by the dedicated team at Pratt & Whitney Canada along with our customers, suppliers and the extended P&WC community. We look forward to celebrating this achievement with them this year.”
Pratt & Whitney also recently hit a milestone with its GTF engines. The geared propulsion system has saved one billion gallons of fuel and 10 million metric tons of carbon emissions since it entered into service.

The company has been advancing sustainable technology like the GTF engines and testing other energy sources. The P&W F100 turbofan was selected by Hermeus to be integrated into its larger hypersonic engine, the Chimera II.
P&W announced on Dec. 19, 2022 that the PW4000-94 Engine had accumulated over 150 million flight hours after being in operation for 35 years. Over 2,500 engines had been delivered to over 70 customers in 30 different countries.
On top of the one billion flying hours, the P&W celebrated another achievement for one of its engines.
The PT6A Engine
The PT6 engine family is celebrating 60 years and has been embraced by fixed-wing and helicopter airframers all over. Over 64,000 PT6 engines have been produced since it was introduced in 1963. The engine powers over 166 different aviation applications. The PT6 is a prevalent model in aviation and has amassed over 500 million flying hours.
The latest PT6 engine is the PT6 E-Series, the first with a dual-channel integrated electronic propeller and engine control system in general aviation. The PT6 is also the only turboprop engine in the world that has been approved for single-engine instrument flight rules (SEIFR) for commercial passenger flights in North America, Europe, New Zealand and Australia.
“Our PT6 engine remains at the forefront of the aviation landscape, bringing breakthrough achievements in performance, control systems and data intelligence,” Della Posta said. “Today’s PT6 is up to four times more powerful, has a 50 percent better power-to-weight ratio and up to 20 percent better specific fuel consumption compared to the original engine. Each new model is developed and designed with a specific mission, platform and customer in mind while pursuing a reduced environmental footprint.”
