Pratt and Whitney engine for Falcon 6X gets certified by FAA

Pratt and Whitney Canada announced on Friday that the FAA has certified the PW812D engine, designed to power the Dassault Falcon 6X business jet. The Falcon 6X is projected for release in 2023.

“The FAA is the third aviation authority to give its stamp of approval for the PW812D engine,” Pratt & Whitney Canada President Maria Della Posta said. “The engine has also been certified by Transport Canada and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). We successfully achieved this critical step by working closely with Dassault since the launch of this great program.”

The engine has gone through performance testing for more than 6,100 hours and 1,150 hours of flight testing, with 20,000 hours on the engine core. The whole PW800 group has undergone more than 240,000 hours of testing, including 42,000 hours of flight testing. The engine shares a common core with the GTF engine, which has over 15 million hours since launching in 2016.

The engine offers improvements in fuel burn, emissions and noise. It can fly on a 50% of Jet-A (kerosene) and Sustainable Alternative Fuel (SAF), according to Pratt and Whitney.

“We congratulate Pratt & Whitney Canada on achieving FAA certification for the PW812D engine,” Chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation Eric Trappier said. “Together, the PW812D engine and Falcon 6X aircraft are a winning combination, designed to set the bar in fuel efficiency, performance and comfort. This milestone brings us closer to the exciting entry into service of the Falcon 6X, expected mid-2023.”

The engine requires 40% less scheduled maintenance and will have 20% fewer inspections, compared with similar engines, according to Pratt and Whitney.

“Every element of the PW800 engine and the services that support it have been conceived with environmental responsibility in mind,” VP of Engineering Edward Hoskin said.
