Piper announces tech upgrades for M600 SLS, including automatic logging of flight data
During the Sun ‘N Fun Aerospace Expo on Tuesday in Lakeland, Florida, Piper Aircraft announced a suite of connected aircraft management capabilities for its Garmin G3000-equipped Piper M600/SLS aircraft.
It is expected to be available later this spring. Garmin’s new PlaneSync technology includes a 4G LTE cellular and Wi-Fi datalink to streamline pre-flight and post-flight activities.
M600 owners can remotely check key aircraft and flight planning information including fuel quantity, aircraft location, oil temperature, battery voltage, the current METAR at the aircraft’s location, and more via the Garmin Pilot app.
The updated software for the G3000 includes enhancements to the synthetic vision system, onboard weather radar, navigation, flight planning, checklists, weight and balance calculation capabilities, and stabilized approach monitoring. Its 3D SafeTaxi aides situational awareness with an advanced view of the ground environment, including airport markers, buildings, and other position markings. It also provides glide-range ring functionality designed in the event of an engine power loss emergency.
Other enhancements include the addition of StormOptix to the aircraft’s weather radar system. The upgrades are free for all owners of 2022 and 2023 M600 aircraft and can be retrofitted back to serial number 089. Piper has produced more than 240 aircraft in the model line thus far.
“At Piper, we take pride in leading the general aviation industry in innovations inside and outside the cockpit,” said Ron Gunnarson, vice president of sales, marketing and customer support. “We are grateful to continue to build on this tradition of excellence. Our M600/SLS customers will enjoy the convenience of being connected to their M600 and real-time aircraft status via their Garmin Pilot App.”
Piper announced during its press event that its M-class dealer inventory is “effectively at zero” due to the strong demand for aircraft. The company feels confident that when an eventual downturn does come that it will be a “softer landing” due to the tight supply of aluminum and other source materials in the global market.
