The Flight Instructor Hall of Fame (HOF) has announced Catherine Cavagnaro and Ron Timmermans as its inductees for 2022.
Each year, the HOF recognizes individuals who have “made significant contributions to aviation education and flight instruction while reflecting credit upon themselves and their profession.” The induction ceremony for Cavagnaro and Timmermans will take place at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh event at the end of July.
Cavagnaro is a flight instructor at the Ace Aerobatic School in Sewanee, Tennessee, and writes the “Flying Smart” column for the AOPA Pilot Magazine, addressing topics like safety, efficiency, proficiency, and the science of flight. She holds ATP, commercial and CFI-I certificates and serves as a designated pilot examiner and FAA Lead Safety Representative for the Nashville FSDO. Cavagnaro also works as a Professor of Mathematics at the University of the South, which has helped her become an expert on spins and aerobatics.
Timmermans spent 40 years outside of aviation before devoting himself to it full-time with the encouragement of his wife, Barbara. Logging more than 4,000 hours of dual instruction, with nearly 1,300 of those in the past five years, he is making up for time he spent on the ground. He serves as a mentor and advocate for young pilots and CFIs in Florida. Timmermans is an ATP-AMEL, Commercial-ASEL, CFI-IA, MEI-IA, AGI-Instrument, and Remote Pilot.
To be eligible for the Flight Instructor Hall of Fame, nominees must have worked in aviation education under Parts 61, 121, 141, or 142 for a minimum of 20 years prior to nomination and have provided active flight instruction for at least 10 years.
