Fiery picture taken above an active volcano triumphs in Drone Photo Awards 2022 | World News


A stunning picture taken above an active volcano and compared to the Big Bang has triumphed at this year’s Drone Photo Awards contest.

Armand Sarlangue captured the powerful image above the red-hot Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland, looking down into its molten depths.

The shot was the overall winner of the Siena Awards’ drone photography competition and was selected by the jury from among thousands of images submitted by 2,624 participants from 116 countries.

Here are some of the category winners, runners-up and commended entries.

 PEOPLE: 1st classified - Sleeping on a Boat by Anindita Roy
Dhaka is located on the bank of the famous Buriganga river. Sadarghat river port of Dhaka is the busiest port in Bangladesh, with services to most of the districts in the country. People from both sides of the Buriganga river cross it using small boats. The boat men working on them, usually sleep at night on the boats themselves.

Wildlife category winner: Mehdi Mohebipor, Iran

WILDLIFE: 1st classified – Solidarity by Mehdi Mohebipour
Flamingos sleep together at night for greater security and stay close together during the day, thus protecting each other. In this crowd of bodies the colorful nuances of the plumage and the reflections of the light stand out.

A young polar bear, a yearling, is playing in the water testing the fresh ice and jumping back and forth in the water with his sibling, while their mother is resting nearby. This image is the result of 5 months in the field, living with and near the bears in a remote camp on the east coast of Svalbard.

Nature category winner: David Rouge, Switzerland

Siena Awards: Drone Photo Awards 2022. 
NATURE: 1st classified – Meeting - by David Rouge
This picture is the result of a dream come true: the meeting of the desert and the ocean. As the drone climbed higher, the photographer noticed a particular atmosphere, where the light highlighted the delicious shapes of these dunes flowing into the South Atlantic Ocean.

Sport category winner: Daniel Koszela, Poland

SPORT:  1st classified - Falling Skiers by Daniel Koszela
The photo taken in March 2022 shows the competitors of the annual ski event: Bieg Piastów held in Szklarska Poręba, at its 46th edition. Skiers whiz in their colorful clothing along the track surrounded by snow-covered trees.

Some laborers at work in a salt pan where they move the salt to form circular lines allowing a slow evaporation under the hot sun. At the end of the day the salt will be collected in baskets: it's a really hard job!

The effect of the sun on the water, a felled tree and a brave bride lying on it: a magnificent picture drawn by nature. The surface of the water looks like a starry night sky, while the bride looks seems a dreamy princess.

URBAN: Commended  - A Love Tale in the Mist - The Taj Mahal by Michele Falzone
This is the mausoleum of Taj Mahal over an incredible sea of clouds formations on river Yamuna. The eternal monument to love was built in 1632 to homage Mumtaz Mahal, the wife of Moghul Shāh Jahān who died while giving birth to their 14th child.

Aerial capture of the incredible rivers of Iceland. All the patterns and colors get shaped under the water surface, resulting from the layers of sediments in the water itself. The photographer called it Quetzalcoatl from the mystical creature shape he imagined from the complex patterns.

NATURE: Commended - Ugly Puddle by Marek Biegalski
This beautiful maar or volcanic crater bears the name Ljótipollur, which literally means ugly puddle. Nonetheless, almost all craters that have lakes within them are exceptionally scenic and photogenic. Ljótipollur is no exception with its red and vegetated slopes and visible lava layers at the brim, besides its beautiful turquoise blue water.

A lone rider races down the slick ice track. Shot during a brisk late afternoon, on the frozen Ghost Lake. The trails left by motorcycles create sinuous patterns and shapes on the ice floe.

Aiken Spring is known as the "Eye of the Earth" and the "Devil's Eye" because of its resemblance to an eye. The spring has a diameter of more than 10 meters, and it is like boiling water, constantly tumbling upward, whilst the sulfur minerals around it have been deposited for a long time thus creating the enchanting colors visible from above.

This diabolical storm cell formed so quickly, the author had to make an extremely quick exit from home for the 2 minute drive to capture this monster. He was very blessed that everything went perfectly. Got the drone in the air pronto, the shelf cloud came across, and he took the shots, without a second to spare.

The blue whale is not only the biggest animal on earth but the biggest that has ever existed. During the 20th century thousands of blue whales were killed by both legal and illegal hunting. After such a big drop on their population, and a lot of effort from international organizations, for the first time their population is increasing.
