A plane hit the roof of an 18-wheeler on a highway in Texas. The plane engine lost power and the pilot attempted a landing on the highway, hitting the roof of the semi before hitting the ground as one of the wings clipped a concrete barrier and caught fire. The pilot and truck driver walked away unharmed.
KHOU reported that around 11:15 a.m. on Sunday a pilot of a Bonanza 35 reported a loss of power. The ATC audio recorded the pilot declaring an emergency, telling the tower he needed to land on the highway.
The pilot attempted to land with traffic after passing the Tomball stadium. A dispatcher alerted emergency services to the situation.
The plane crashed on the northbound lanes of SH-99 between Cypress Rosehill Road and Telge Road. Officer Richard Standifer told KHOU the wings of the Bonanza were wider than the roadway, causing the wing to hit the barriers.
He reported there was a fuel leak but it was stopped when the fire department arrived on the scene.
The pilot was flying a survey assignment, coming from the West Houston Airport (IWS), and lost power over the roadway. The single-engine aircraft was destroyed but there were no injuries reported at the scene. The plane remained on the road until the FAA and NTSB could arrive to investigate.
